SECRETS OF A RECOVERING CONTROL FREAK: HOW I FINALLY LEARNED TO LE GOD LEAD ME by Bethany Comerford

Using the serenity prayer as a guide, the last line is obviously the most important. Heavenly Father absolutely wants us to use our agency to make decisions and plans for ourselves, but sometimes those aren’t the same plans He has for us. Are we willing to accept that when the time comes? The sooner we do, the happier we can be.

ACCEPTING THE THINGS I CANNOT CHANGE…
One metaphor is called “Holding on to the Branch”–we do this when we want something so badly, but it’s not meant for us, at least not right now. Trusting God will help us let go of that “branch.” This would describe the first line of the serenity prayer.
We need to replace “coincidence” with “tender mercy.” Calling those uncanny moments or incidents coincidences removes God from the picture. If we believe He is an active part of our lives, we need to “see” His hand at work in our lives.
God’s timing is always perfect, ours isn’t. Sometimes we have to accept that what we want will take longer than expected–that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.
Instead of asking “Why me?” when we’re faced with a trial, ask “Why NOT me?” God absolutely gives us more than we can handle so that we will turn to Him for help. When we do, He teaches us about ourselves, shows us our weaknesses, and also connects us with others to help us. This is where we grow closest to the Savior and truly understand the need for His atonement.
CHANGING THE THINGS I CAN…
Faith vs. Fear: Who wins? It’s important to understand what faith really means.
Learning to adapt to life’s curve balls. Instead of asking why, instead ask, “What is the lesson here?”
We have to “stay in motion”–God will not MAKE us move, but He can make other things around us happen when we start moving.
CONCLUSION
Heavenly Father cares about even the tiniest details of our lives. He’s the only one who truly knows our capabilities–let him be the guide.
About Our Guest:
Bethany Comerford is a Certified Faith-Based Life Coach. She wrote a book in 2020 called Secrets of a Recovering Control Freak: How I Finally Learned to Let God Lead Me, where she shares the plans she’d set for her life (all good and worthy things!), and how none of them happened according to her plan, but how it was even better.
She served a mission in the Dominican Republic while her future husband, Cam, was serving in Ohio. They got married 4 months after his return. They struggled with infertility for 4 years & then secondary infertility for 2 years. They now have two daughters (ages 14 & 10). Their younger daughter was recently diagnosed with Autism level 3 and severe intellectual disability.
In the book, Bethany shares how she learned to trust that Heavenly Father knows more than we do and that He also cares about the little things that mean a lot to us.
