Being gay in the church is not easy. Do I qualify for the Celestial Kingdom? Asking myself hard questions and pray for answers. A year ago, it first came to my attention when a member told me the church was using me.

And recently, another member who is preparing to serve a mission in New Zealand said;

“But it’s not eternal either. Endure to the end, and eventually, you won’t be gay. I am not saying I know everything or that I’m Dennis’s judge. And I am certainly not saying he is unworthy, but I know this to qualify for the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom, you must be married and sealed, men and women in the temple.”

Being told I am not good enough, not worthy to receive the highest degree of the celestial kingdom because I am gay, is heartbreaking.

You can’t imagine the amount of hate mail, death threats, and constantly being told I’m a disgrace; it takes a toll.

However, when it’s coming from fellow members, It’s heartbreaking.

When I think of the celestial kingdom, the verse in the Book of Mormon comes to mind.
“And they who keep their second estate shall also inherit all things.”
(2 Nephi 2:25)

In Doctrine and Covenants, it says, “For all who will have a part in the first resurrection shall inherit thrones, kingdoms, principalities, and powers, dominions, all heights and depths”
(D&C 76:114)

In the Holy Bible, it reads, “But many that are first shall be last, and the last first.”
(Mark 10:31)

The gospel brings me happiness, but being gay in the church is hard. The gospel of Jesus Christ is true, I know it, I live it, and I love it.

So, how would you reply to this future Elder or any other member who tells me I don’t qualify?

This is a difficult question, and there is no easy or definitive answer. Asking hard questions and praying for answers is the best way to approach this situation.

However, it is essential to remember that everyone is on their journey and that we are all children of God, worthy of love and respect.
