Another great episode Richie! I appreciated Kurt being so candid about his feelings on faith, etc. As someone in a similar boat, I think its important for active members to realize that not all inactives are inactive for the same reasons, and that they don’t all hate the church. Also, it shouldn’t be a social dilemma on whether you can be friends with someone or not. I tend to view these “black and white moralists” as “young souls.” My mom is one of them, so having had both of her kids go inactive has been a challenge for her. I 100% agree, though, that its a personal journey and one that other people need to learn to just leave alone. Worry about your own salvation, and let me worry about mine. We all have our own paths we take and none of us understands how the greater tapestry is woven until the day we’re allowed to take a step back. Keep up the good work, I think these types of conversations (along with the “gay episodes” as they’ve come to be called) are what our Utah CULTURE needs to hear and come to grips with, and be able to separate real spirituality from culture or even religious dogma.

I appreciate Kurt Besner’s candor about the culture of the church and how he doesn’t feel let in… I feel similarly; I think if I don’t match the stereotypical cultural cut-out, many members don’t talk to you unless they have to, like as if my clothing style, musical tastes, liberal views, are incorrect, or in some ways distasteful or dangerous. Kurt mentioned he thinks its fear-based, and I agree. Prejudice comes from fear due to a lack of association or interaction, and it prevents people from talking with people of other cultures. I truly feel like I am from a different culture, even though I am a Mormon, but that doesn’t make me any less Mormon. Yet in many ways I feel like I’m treated like I am less Mormon, and this makes me feel less like I’m in the right place, even though I have a strong testimony. There’s something wrong – is it pride? and it makes me sad.
